Working for Carers supports unpaid carers aged 16+ in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland to enable them to move towards employment, as well as carers who are in work to sustain work and achieve career progression.

The project is led by North Tyneside Carers’ Centre with Newcastle Carers and Carers Northumberland as delivery partners. The partnership are leading providers of support for unpaid carers across the North of Tyne area. The three specialist charities understand the very specific challenges that carers face in accessing and sustaining paid employment.

The project provides assurance to carers that with the right support, they have the capacity to move into work and still meet their caring responsibilities.

The project creates a more comprehensive employment journey for unpaid carers looking for work. For unpaid carers in work, it helps them develop the skills and confidence needed to progress in work.

Support for those seeking employment is delivered from Carers’ Hubs in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland and at outreach locations. Carers receive 1 to 1 support in all aspects of job-seeking, alongside advice and guidance offering practical solutions to balancing their caring role with paid employment.

Working for Carers provides direct support to employers in the area, working in collaboration to identify opportunities to improve the employment prospects for different carer groups e.g. over 50s, young carers and parent carers. The project also offers 1 to 1 support to unpaid carers in their workplace, removing barriers to participation. Wherever possible group support is offered, connecting employees and generating peer support in the workplace.

This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and is delivered until March 2025.
