Mayor Jamie Driscoll

Jamie Driscoll, North of Tyne Mayor

“Millions of people were murdered in the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution of other groups, and the more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. This Friday is Holocaust Memorial Day. Many of us will bear witness for those lives, those ordinary people, their families and communities. We will honour them. We will remind ourselves that it was also ordinary people who facilitated these atrocities, ordinary people who stood by. But we will also remember the ordinary people who resisted. This Holocaust Memorial Day I will light a candle and put it in my window in the evening. I will take a minute to think of those who died, those who had their loved ones wrenched from them, and those who took a stand – even in the face of overwhelming odds – against bigotry, hatred, and oppression. I hope you’ll join me and do the same, wherever you are.”
